First of all, I work in IT for work and let me tell you, this printer does a fine job of printing documents in both black and white, & color. I've been able to make custom cards at home and save a lot of money with this printer. Plus, it's a nice personal touch. One item that absolutely infuriates me with this device and why I CAN'T recommend it, is because the scanner and its software is absolute hot garbage. First, I made the mistake of assuming a device THIS expensive would have duplex scanning. It does NOT. I've had much cheaper previous MFD's that had duplex scanning. Secondly, I can't for the life of me figure out how to do something as simple as scan multiple pages into a PDF. I am trying to go paperless document retention and to scan duplex documents of 60 pages, for a homeowners policy for example, took me nearly an hour. From the machine you cannot continue scanning. It'll scan a single page, then save the document as a PDF. If you initiate it from the brother software on the PC, you can scan a single page, then "add more." The problem is, You have to click add more, and acknowledge with the mouse EVERY-SINGLE-PAGE.. Not including Duplex scanning is one thing, having the software utterly incapable of supporting it is another all together. This replaced three devices - a 20 + year old HP LaserJet B&W that was on it's last legs - and a 13 year old Epson (slow) scanner, as well as a 10 year old HP color inkjet. Needless to say I have less wires, more available connections and larger unused desk area now.I can't say anything con or bad about this Multi-Function with several days use. Setup was easy following the quick start guide as it's ethernet wired to my router with a Win10 PC and WIFI with an upstairs PC (Win7), a MacBook Pro with Air Print and an iPad also with AirPrint. The only glitch was with the Win7 PC. No printer driver available from Microsoft even after a driver update, but Brother's web site has a driver download for a 64bit Win7. Once the driver was downloaded connection as quick. What can I say about AirPrint except it connected immediately with no fussing from me.Machine is quiet and goes into sleep mode when not used for a couple of minutes. Multiple ways to feed paper, two sided print, envelope and label printing, not much more I need, even fax which I don't need (does anybody?).I use this multi-function for my non professional home office so it won't see a lot of use, but hoping for longevity at least as much as the LaserJet.I considered another HP multifunction but with the chipped laser cartridges preventing alternative buying I went with the Brother. Not to say I won't buy Brother cartridges, but at least I have an option.I have not needed direct Brother support yet as their self help web site has a lot of easy to access solutions/information.The print quality to me is good ++ but not as rich as the Inkjet. Scanner utility is easy and the scanner is very fast. This is a well designed and thought out printer/scanner.Update: 10/14/21 Printing an envelope is a royal pain. Instructions on the web site are hard to find, but there is a video after much looking. Instructions are NOT in the user manual. You have to open the back cover and leave it open, lower two tabs, then load the envelope into the front cover. Only then will you get into the printer options to print envelopes. There are no options for envelopes unless you do all of the above. Once finished reset the tabs and close the rear cover to resume normal printing. You should be able to load the envelope into the front cover and choose envelope options then have the envelope exit out the front. I can hand write much faster. For this reason I have lowered the rating to four star.Further Update 10/16/21: Well that was a fast love affair. Trying to print envelopes is an exercise in frustration and failure. The printer seems to need an exact order of timed settings input (which I have not figured out) to print envelopes. I get repeated "paper jam" "retry" errors when envelope is just inserted into the front cover feed. When retry is pressed on the control panel all settings for printing the envelope are erased and you need to start over - only to get "paper jam, retry" error again. I have an email into Brother to try to work this out, but software for envelopes is so far useless.I have to lower the star rating for this problem. If you print a lot of envelopes I cannot recommend this printer.Accepts RE manufactured toner. Excellent WiFi capabilitiesI upgraded to this from a DCP-7065DN (admittedly a 'bargain' model). There is nothing at all wrong with my previous Brother or the years of service it's already provided me - I just wanted to be able to print color now that I'm working from home these days. I have to say that I'm happy with the direction Brother has taken with their printers and the interface.I updated the printer firmware immediately, so if there were existing problems the firmware fixes, I haven't encountered them and cannot comment on what might be a problem/annoyance if one uses the printer without a firmware update. The update went smoothly and was easy to perform.- The size of this printer is only slightly larger in footprint than my old B&W printer, which was a pleasant surprise. It's not exactly a light machine though - it's got some heft to it!- The interface is much easier and cleaner to use than on past machines. Being a touch screen is likely 90% of this, as my previous Brother was just 2 LCD lines and a handful of buttons.- This printer is MUCH more quiet than the above mentioned printer. When I commented aloud how nice my first print was, others in my household were surprised I'd printed something - they didn't hear the whirr of the printer at all. When listening to music (at a reasonable volume) while working, I don't know anyone else has printed anything until they show up in my office to collect it.- Setup was a breeze and all the computers on my network are able to see it and print to it effortlessly.- Scanning is easier and there is now an option to push the scan to a Dropbox location (among other options), which was easy to set up and works wonderfully.- Print quality is great for a consumer machine. I'm able to print drawings that are meant to be 11x17 (or larger) on 8.5x11 and can still read the fine print.- As many, many color printer reviews have said, the colors on-page are significantly darker than on screen. For example, if I have a light-green highlight on screen that's easy to see through, it'll be difficult to read when printed. This is kind of expected, even on commercial grade printers, though even so, this seemed a bit darker than I might have expected. I'm not printing photographs with this, nor will I - that's a job for a decent inkjet printer with high quality paper (IMO).- The only downside to this printer for me is that it can't do 11x17" paper, but that is standard for this price range. Would need a larger and more complicated machine to handle wider paper. The only fault here is with my budget, not with Brother.Overall: Zero complaints so far - a miracle when dealing with printers! No duplex adf for scanning. This one does NOT have the ability to scan a two sided document using the document feeder. It’s a pain to do a two sided document manually. Otherwise a great printer!I bought this for my home office, and felt it was the best value for money. Until the day I had to scan a huge amount of documents that were double sided. My previous brother monochrome printer had no trouble doing duplex scans, but this one does not have the feature. Quite a big shortcoming, that you won't figure out till the day you need it. Having to manually rearrange and merge 300 pages on the laptop is not an activity I had envisioned purchasing this.If that is not a use case for you, I'd say go with Brother but maybe a smaller/cheaper model.Easy to setup. Connected well with all devices at home wirelessly. No complaints with print quality so far. Just bought couples of weeks ago.
