I bought this printer to replace an aging HP LaserJet 4P (20 years old!) which still worked very well, but was a bit pokey and starting to have problems with the paper feed mechanism (I had the 4P connected to my network via a device that connected the printer's parallel port to my router. Despite its age, it worked flawlessly with Windows 7). Although conventional wisdom suggests the HP does not make printers like it used to, I was predisposed to the brand given my experience with my last purchase.Although I don't have extremely high printer demands (10,000 sheets a year), I chose this model because the reviews of the entry level models were not stellar which generally appears to be the case across all manufacturers. I found this model easy to set up using the disk the came with the printer. Windows 7 recognized it right away and it printed out a test page without any problems. I did not notice any smell that was reported by others. Print copies were excellent. Noise level when printing is relatively high, but not objectionable. It is totally silent when on and waiting for a print job. Speed of printing is very good. The paper and envelope feed mechanisms work very well and I have not had a jam during the first month of operation. Compared to the entry-level printers, it is twice as large and does occupy a lot of real estate on my desk. But for me, that is a good tradeoff for general reliability and speed of operation. It is also nice being able to load an entire ream of paper rather than 250 sheets which is the limit for most small printers. It has a web interface that provides extensive diagnostic information, usage history, etc. I'm not sure if I'll use this information, but it's nice to know that it is there.Unlike the 4P, it did not come with a hard copy of a manual which is typical these days. It would be very useful if they produced an e-book version of the manual for use on a Kindle or Ipad which I prefer to use over a PDF version on the PC.The only thing that I can't report on is long-term reliability, but it appears to be well-constructed and have the sense that it will be a good performer over the long run. If I have a problem, I will be sure to post an update.
